The authors feel that American foreign policy should be grounded in the ethical realism of George Kennan, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Hans Morgenthau, who helped to shape the policy of containment that succeeded so well in defeating Soviet Communism while avoiding war. The present drive to remodel foreign countries in the U.S. image alienates friends and foes alike. The authors put aside their political differences to write this book convinced that the reestablishment of a sensible foreign policy is our most important priority.
