Johnson, professor emeritus at UCSD, takes the position that America's overextended military imperialism coupled with the apparently limitless power of the military industrial complex may spell doom -- the U.S. may collapse in a manner similar (but not identical) to the Roman Republic. While his arguments aren't completely persuasive, they are certainly stimulating, and his knowledge is encyclopedic. Given the power that Johnson attributes to the forces of military imperialism, it would seem that the citizenry is powerless to reverse the course. It is worthwhile to consider how these powerful forces may be thwarted through a democratic process.
