Monticello Township farm
John was born in Yorkshire, England, on June 12, 1816, and came with his father and brother
to the United States in 1832. He settled first in Wood County, Ohio, but moved to Green
county, Wisconsin, in 1838. The following year he moved to Monticello, joining other members
of his family. He obtained a tract of government land there and over the rest of his life
he improved the farm and buildings.
In 1844 he married Sarah Alderson in Wisconsin. Sarah had been born in Yorkshire, England, in
1827. John and Sarah had ten children, two of whom died in infancy. They were active in the
Methodist Church and well known in the farming community of Monticello, Wisconsin.
John and Sarah lived on their farm for the remainder of their days.
