One of the most insidious myths is that there are strange, inexplicable forces at work, beyond the reach or ken of the common person.

I am particularly sensitive to two ways of propagating this myth: the organization as actor, and the passive voice.

Organizations are controlled by people - perhaps in complex ways, but nevertheless by human actors. Each time you read or hear that a business or government "decided" or "bought" something, be aware that humans (presumably the CEO) took the action.

Similarly, whenever something "was done," be sure to ask, "By whom?" Rebel against the use of the passive voice!

In a democracy, people must assert their power; as long as the average person feels lost in a complex world of nameless actors, he or she is of no consequence.

A good start is to understand that power is human.
